PRIME LAMBS
589 spring lambs were forward today, ranging from 37p/kg to 53kg, selling to an ever-expanding ringside of eight buyers keen to secure all classes and types, and requesting more every week.
An overall market SQQ of 363p/kg was achieved. Well finished in spec lambs were generally selling at 360p/kg to 380p/kg. ¾ and pure bred lambs attracting a premium, ranging from 380p/kg to 395p/kg, peaking at 429p/kg for a pen of Beltex cross from first time vendor M Broadhurst, West Horton. Closely followed by neighbour KA Purtill, Wigan achieving 423p/kg. Others to achieve 390p/kg to 410p/kg were D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe and T&S Blades, Arkholme.
Top price per head was achieved by RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead for heavy Texels achieving £179, with Charolais cross £178 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, Texel cross £175 from J Lamb, Glasson with others £174 from T&ME Longton & Son, Quernmore.
Lighter weight lambs sold to 374p/kg for Texel cross from P&AJ Whitaker, Quernmore and £163 for Beltex cross from M Broadhurst, West Horton.
Buyers are keen to secure well drawn pens of level lambs, with a premium achieved for well finished fed lambs.
PRIME HOGGS
An unexpected entry of 90 hoggs were greeted by buyers keen to secure all classes and types. The best sold to 321p/kg for continentals from Cornthwaite Moors, Hambleton. Other well finished continentals were 280pkg to 300p/kg, with end of season sorts regarding from 180p/kg to 240p/kg. Top grossing being Texels and Charolais cross from D Clark, Preston at £163. All hoggs forward averaged 258p/kg.
CULL SHEEP
Cull ewes are coming forward in greater numbers on a weekly basis, as farmers look to offload passengers, as they sell lambs ahead of clipping. A wide range of ewes forward today, sold to five keen active buyers, generating an overall market average of £147.
Just a handful of the strongest continental ewes forward, selling to £214 from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold others at £198 and £196. Both J Lamb, Glasson and D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold Texel cross at £192. Suffolk cross achieved £188 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton. Other stronger end first cross ewes were £170 to £185 and mediums £150 to £165. Mules sold to £176 from J Lamb, Glasson, with others at £170 from JE&J Pye, Quernmore and £169 RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Medium Mules were generally £148 to £160. Just a handful of pure hill pred ewes sold to £160 for Cheviot from DR Presotn, Caton, Lleyns £148 from KA Purtill, Wigan. An entry of smaller hard worked Swaledale’s sold to £80 from DM Eames, Abbeystead.
